Warm-Up
1. Watch this video called, 'What is Debating?'.
2. Read through the sheet 'Structure and Roles of Our Debates. This is slightly different to your traditional formal debate, having 4 speakers instead of 3. This is due to class numbers so that everyone gets to participate. 3. Other roles in a debate include: timekeeper, chairperson (who introduces the debate), and adjudicators (judges). |

Glossary of Terms: Affirmative Team: must convince the audience that the topic statement is true. Negative Team: must convince the audience that the topic statement is false. Define: Describe the meaning of the topic and words in the topic, according to the point of view of the particular team. Each team will define the topic in a way that suits their own argument, so each side may have a different definition of the topic. Summarise: State the main points or argument in a concise form. Refute: To disprove, challenge or counter the other side’s argument. Rebut: An argument that tries to directly argue against the argument of a previous speaker. |
Voting for the questions:
1. The questions you can choose from will be displayed on the whiteboard so you can read before voting.
2. You will each have 4 coloured sticker dots to use for voting.
3. Once you have decided, go to the voting poster and stick your dots next to the questions you like best. You can put all dots on one question, or share it around.
4. The dots will be counted and the 4 with the most votes will be used for our class debates.

Assigning Teams:
1. Number each question from 1-8. Each question will have an affirmative and a negative statement.
2. On the scrap paper given, write your name. You then must rank which questions you would like to (1st preference at the top of the list, 8th preference last on the list).
3. Your papers will then be randomly selected and everyone will be distributed based on preference.
4. 2x debates will have 4 people per team & 2x debates will have 3 people per team
